KUALA LUMPUR: The fate of the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2020 in Johor is expected to be known Wednesday when the Sukma Supreme Committee meets via video-conferencing in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said he would chair the meeting and among options to be considered was the postponement of the games.

“Among implications and aspects to be considered are athletes’ preparations, challenges and technical constraints as well as views from sponsors with regards to promotional activities, marketing, media coverage and pre-Sukma programmes.

“But, the most important issue is the safety and health of some 30,000 individuals (athletes, officials, staff, media representatives and volunteers) who will involve in the event, and this does not include the number of supporters and spectators who will be present at various tournament venues, ” he said in a statement.

The committee comprises all 14 state youth and sport Excos, Olympic Council of Malaysia, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education, Armed Forces Sports Council and PDRM Sports Council.
