Father-son duo held for alleged armed robbery

KUCHING: A father and son were arrested by the police for suspected involvement in an armed robbery at a 24-hour convenience store in Jalan Sultan Tengah.

Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said they received a report on the incident around 11.50pm last Friday (Mar 3).

A suspect armed with a samurai sword entered the premises and forced the store worker to hand over RM150 cash and a lighter.

The crime was captured on the closed circuit television (CCTV).

“Acting on information, a police team led by ASP Mohamad Nizam managed to arrest two men aged 37 and 65 at two locations, namely in Taman Sourabaya Indah and Bandar Baru Semariang.

“The samurai blade, clothes and vehicles used by the suspects during the incident were also seized,” he said.

Ahsmon added that both suspects who did not have any prior records, are currently remanded for seven days under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code to facilitate investigations.

Nonetheless, a urine test found that the 37-year-old suspect tested positive for amphetamine/methamphetamine.

The case is being investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and caning upon conviction.
