Fatimah hopes to see end to stateless issue

KUCHING: The long-standing issue of stateless children is being resolved by the Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Ministry.

Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the issue stemmed from various factors.

“Among them, the mothers of their children are foreigners. Secondly, the children are born out of wedlock and thirdly, the parents themselves have no documentation.

“This is followed by unregistered births as well as marriages,” she told the press here on Wednesday (July 8).

Fatimah said the issue at present was that the application process for citizenship took four to five years.

“This is followed by the applicants’ failure to get certificates after their previous applications were approved.

“This is due to the lack of awareness about the importance of self-identification and citizenship,” she said.

She added that if left unattended, the issue of statelessness would affect the children; they would be unable to get education, medical, welfare aid and employment.

“With this, the children are prone to social problems.”
