KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) has chided Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen for saying that PBB was adopting Umno-like mentality on the road signage issue.

PBB deputy youth chief Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said Umno had nothing to do with the issue at hand.

He was responding to Chong’s remark that some PBB members had typical Umno mentality when they commented on Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth’s (Dapsy) attempt to put up Chinese characters on road signs in the city centre.

“Chong seems to have a double standard when it comes to the application to the rule of law. And it shows how shallow his understanding on importance of unity in Sarawak,” he told New Sarawak Tribune on Sunday.

Fazzrudin said preserving unity was the utmost important thing for the people in a state which consisted of over 24 ethnic groups.

“So to Chong, you can’t even fight for Sarawak when you were in the federal government. Now that you are not, the least you could do is join us to preserve and uphold Sarawak unity,” he said.

The Tupong assemblyman told Chong that he would only feel the loss once racial harmony and unity were gone.

“That will be too late when it comes to that stage. And we have to be firm to ensure we avoid this. Nothing to do with politics,” he said.

He reminded that there were avenues to fight on what they think best for Sarawak, but to do it in accordance to the rules, regulations and the law.

Last Thursday, Dapsy Kuching members had pasted Chinese characters on road signs at Jalan Main Bazaar, Wayang Street and Jalan Green Hill. Various groups and state leaders had voiced feedback on the matter saying they should have gone through the proper channel and not take things into their own hands.
