KUCHING: The Federation of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Division Chinese Associations recently donated food and baby supplies to 13 people from two poor families here.

One of the family members, Siong Siaw Fung, had asked the federation to help her family and her brother’s family.

Federation president, Datuk Richard Wee sent a welfare team to check on the families in Batu Kitang at Mile 8, Kuching-Bau Road.

Siong said that both families depended on her husband, who was earning only RM40 per day, to support them.

She added the monthly allowance given by the Welfare Department was not enough for the children’s milk powder.

The two families consisted of seven children ranging from four months to 12 years old and six adults.

Four of the children belong to Siong and her husband while the other three belong to her brother.

Siong told the welfare team that her brother’s wife, an Indonesian, had left the three children with him without leaving any contact.

Apart from that, two of her brother’s children do not have birth certificates.

An elderly female relative who used to work at a restaurant also lived with the families. The woman lost her job due to the movement control order (MCO).

The federation’s welfare representative and Women Section chief, Georgina Chong and her team visited the families to present food supplies, baby milk powder and also other basic necessities to them.

The federation said various charitable groups and individuals were also donating food and dry rations to the families.

It added it would try to help the two children apply for the birth certificates and solve their nationality problems.
