KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Women’s wing hopes more woman candidates will be nominated to contest in the coming state election.

PRS Women chief Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodie said as in previous elections, it had always been the wish of its Women wing that the party field more woman candidates.

“This coming election is no exception for us in the Women’s wing as PRS is not short of credible and eligible women members who can be winnable candidates,” she told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

She was asked to comment on the possibility of the party fielding more woman candidates in the upcoming state and general elections.

“Although the party broke the trend during the last general election by fielding a woman candidate (Rita Sarah Patrick Insol), we hope that it is not the first and the last,” she said.

She said in Sarawak, almost 50 percent of the population are women and likewise in terms of registered voters.
“Thus, we feel the women representation in both the State Legislative Assembly and in Parliament must depict that numbers,” she said.

Doris said however, the Women’s wing would uphold the consensus and decision made by the party led by Tan Sri James Jemut Masing as well as Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leadership with regard to candidacy in the coming elections.

“What is important is for GPS to win all the seats in both elections,” she said.

On the preparation for the coming 12th state election, she said the party would be going on the ground soon to meet the people.

“We are prepared all the time. In fact, since middle of last year, we intensified our preparations through our project ‘Jelajah Kawasan, Sentuhan Kejayaan’ by having dialogue sessions with the grassroots members, especially women members in all PRS constituencies.

“Due to the movement control order (MCO), we halted and deferred some of the programme and activities in the last few months but we will carry on again real soon,” said Doris.
