Fifa aims 700 million students worldwide

PETALING JAYA: The International Football Federation (Fifa) is gunning the participation of 700 million school children worldwide over the next three years for its Football for Schools Programme.

FIFA Technical Development Services Programme Manager (technical development division), Philip Zimmermann said the programme which was introduced early this year, aimed to make football more accessible to both boys and girls around the world by incorporating football activities into physical education curriculum.

“We would also provide mobile application to all 211 members that would not only include  football sessions, but also life skills sessions,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the regional workshop of the programme which were officiated by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) deputy president, Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal, here, Wednesday.

The one-day programme which started Wednesday, involved the participation of 30 representatives from 12 Asean countries, National Sports Council and also the Education Ministry.

The establishment of the programme was initiated following an agreement signed between the Fifa President Gianni Infantino, Unesco director-deneral Audrey Azoulay and UN World Food Programme executive director, David Beasley, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, early this year.  – Bernama
