BINTULU: The effort to put out a fire at the Tanjong Kidurong landfill is continuing.

The fire, which began 11 days ago, has razed 1.5 acres of land at the landfill.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre, a fire is still burning 30 to 40 feet beneath the landfill.

Three excavators are being used to dig several holes to allow water to seep into the earth and extinguish the fire beneath the waste.

It was understood that the Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and seven other agencies are planning on a new strategy which may involve the use of drones.

A special task force to deal with landfill fires has been set up with the Bintulu Resident as chairman.
