Wong, who was born in Brunei in 1958 to Sarawakian parents, received the documents validating his citizenship status from Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew at SUPP Piasau office here yesterday
Ting, who is Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Piasau chairman said the party would continue to assist stateless applicants in submitting their citizenship applications.
“We have been doing this since 2004 when I was with former Miri MP Tan Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui,” he said.
Earlier, Ting presented a document validating Wong’s citizenship status.
According to Ting, Wong first approached him in 2017 to apply for his citizenship.
“In 1971, I had applied for Malaysian citizenship but was rejected,” recalled Wong.
Both Wong’s parents were working in Brunei in the 1950’s until his birth in 1958.
Upon receiving the documents validating his Malaysian citizenship yesterday, Wong expressed his thanks to the Ministry of Home Affairs, SUPP Piasau and Ting.
Ting disclosed that out of 142 cases that SUPP Piasau submitted, 48 were successfully granted with Malaysian citizenship.
“We are trying our very best to help these stateless persons to obtain their applications,” assured Ting.
