Fined RM10k for online gambling

KUCHING: A local woman was fined RM10,000 or two months’ jail in default by the Magistrate’s Court here today.

This was after she pleaded guilty of engaging in online top-up gambling activities.

Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi meted the sentence on the accused Catherine, 28, from Debak, after her guilty plea to a charge that was read to her by an interpreter.

According to the charge, she committed the offence by using a smartphone at a mini grocery store in Taman Sri Sarawak, here, around 4:25pm on July 25.

As such, the accused was charge with involvement in online gambling activities under Section 4B (a) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953.

Based on the facts of the case, a police team from the IPK Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department raided a mini grocery store in Taman Sri Sarawak after suspecting an online gambling activity using smartphone applications was conducted there.

During the raid, the police managed to arrest a woman who was sitting at the counter of the premises.

As a result of the inspection, the police confiscated a mobile phone, and cash amounting to RM277.

The results of the investigation and report confirmed that the smartphone confiscated from the accused was used as a gambling machine, as stated under the interpretation of the Common Gaming House Act 1953.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
