Fined RM3k for pistol, ammunition possession

KUCHING: A telephone seller was fined RM3,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here today (13 April)on two charges of possessing a 9mm pistol and 16 rounds of live ammunition without a valid licence.

Accused Chong Chuan Wee, 43, pleaded guilty to two charges read out before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

The court set two months’ imprisonment for each charge should the accused fail to pay the fine.

He was alleged to have the weapon at a house at Lorong 2F, Jalan Rock here, at about 11.00 am on September 28, 2005.

Therefore, the accused was charged under Section 4 of the Arms Act 1960 and is punishable under Section 8 (a) of the same act.

if convicted, he can be sentenced to imprisonment not exceeding seven years or a maximum fine of RM10,000 or both.

According to the facts of the case, a police team from the Sarawak IPK Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department had raided a residence believed to house drug activities.

Upon arrival at the premises, the team leader called its occupants but there was no response then upon which he instructed his men to cut the door lock.

After successfully entering the house, the police team leader introduced himself to the suspect and instructed his men to make an inspection.

The results of the raid and inspection on the wooden shelf used for worship, they found 16 bullets, a pistol and 35 strings of amulet sticks.

Further investigation found that the pistols and ammunition tested by the armaments officers were homemade which worked well and could explode as well as fire.

Prosecution of the case was led by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
