Fined RM5k for disposing of stolen items

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here yesterday sentenced a local man to an RM5,000 fine or 10 months’ jail in default for disposing of the stolen property of a handbag, driving licence, and various ATM cards and credit cards.

All the said items belonged to a 45-year-old woman that she lost in a snatch incident last August.

Mohd Fauzul Hazmat, 30, pleaded guilty to a single offence before Magistrate Zaiton Anuar.

According to the charges, he committed the crime on September 1, 2022, approximately 4.30pm, at Lorong Stutong 2C.

If convicted, the accused faces a prison sentence of up to seven years or a fine, or both, under Section 414 of the Penal Code.

According to the facts of the case, on August 23, while driving in Lorong Stampin, the complainant was hit by a motorcycle ridden by the accused.

The complainant then exited her vehicle to assess the man’s condition but the accused, nevertheless, then seized the complainant’s handbag containing an identity card, driver’s licence, ATM cards, credit cards, car keys and RM500 in cash.

The victim is reported to have sustained a loss of RM1,500.

Subsequently the complainant then filed a police report in order for further actions to take place.

The police were able to apprehend the culprit and, guided by him, pointed to the location where he disposed of the case items following the robbery of a woman.

According to the findings of the investigation, the accused threw the items in question in a bush area near an alley in Stutong, and the complainant confirmed that the items in question belonged to her.

The case was prosecuted by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad, and the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
