BATU NIAH: Ten family members escaped unhurt while one was unaccounted for after their house was engulfed by a fire at KM62, Kampung Labau, Jalan Persisir today.

The State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) despatched firefighters from the Batu Niah station to the scene after receiving a distress call on the 7.43am incident.

Batu Niah fire chief Francis Aceh Angai said by the time the firefighters arrived, the fire had destroyed the house.

“There were difficulties faced by the team as there was no fire hydrant or open water source at the scene.

“The firefighters also searched for one of the family members who were not accounted for. According to the head of the family, ten of them were not at home at the time of the incident as they were either in school or working on a farm,” he said in a statement.

The family consists of a married couple, four men, two girls, a boy and two grandchildren. The person that the firefighters were searching for was the third son, aged 21.

Francis said the firefighters searched for signs of the man at the scene three times after the fire was extinguished. The fire forensic team from Sarawak Zone 6 also assisted in the investigation.

“According to the mother, her son went fishing with a friend on Monday (July 27). She was not sure whether he had returned home. His fishing tackle was found under the house but it was not clear whether he went out again after that.

“Police are now searching for the missing man,” he said.
