Fire razes 17-door longhouse

Firemen extinguishing the flames that destroyed a storehouse and damaged two kitchen areas of the 17-door longhouse last Sunday (Sept 5).

SELANGAU: An evening fire nearly burned down a 17-door longhouse at Rumah Una Tutong, Nanga Duat on Sunday (Sept 5).

It was reported that only a storehouse and two kitchen areas were damaged in the fiery incident around 6.55pm.

After receiving an emergency call, firemen from the Selangau station had to travel approximately 8km to the scene.

By the time the team arrived, the fire was still raging and burning the storehouse as well as the kitchens of Doors 12 and 13.

Extinguishing works followed suit by using a fire hydrant located about 50 feet from the longhouse.

The storehouse was completely destroyed while the longhouse was 20 percent damaged.

No casualties or injuries were reported during the incident.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred were still under investigation.

Also present at the scene were the police and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) personnel.
