KUCHING: A fire broke out this morning, destroying a soybean processing factory as well as the workers’ quarters.

According to a Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) spokesperson, they received a distress call on the incident, which happened in Jalan Ellis-Tan Sri Ong Kee Hui, at 7.22am.

Firemen from Padungan, Tabuan Jaya and Batu Lintang stations were deployed to the scene to commence extinguishing works.

“The factory was about 30 per cent destroyed, while the six units of non-permanent structure workers’ quarters located within the factory were 100 per cent destroyed.

“The factory’s processing machine and storage, as well as its raw supplies, were also destroyed in the fire,” he added.

Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control at 7.47am, and the flames were completely doused off at 8.32am.

The causes of the fire and total losses have yet to be ascertained.
