Fire victims receive monetary aid from Lions Clubs

SIBU: The Lions Clubs under Region 1, 2, 3 & 4 have responded swiftly by collecting a sum of RM4,320 to assist two Chinese families whose houses were razed by fire on the first day of Chinese New Year.

The 16 fire victims comprised family members of two brothers.

The monetary collection’s organising chairperson Dr David Ling Sien Ngan, who is also the president of Lions Club of Sibu Pahlawan, handed over the monetary donation to the fire victims in front of his clinic yesterday.

The handover was witnessed by Lions Clubs International District 308-A2 Region 2 chairperson Dixon Chiu. Also present were president of Lions Club of Sibu Dudong Poh Ching Hua, president of Lions Club of Sibu Berjaya Edisom Chiam and president of Lions Club of Sibu Central Sylvia Chua.

It was reported In the incident on Jan 22, a semi-detached house and a car along Jalan Yun Chai Lok, Sungai Bidut , were destroyed by fire.
In addition, another house next to it was partially damaged in the same incident.

Fortunately, the occupants from both houses were unharmed, and managed to escape safely during the 8.15 am incident.

A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firemen from Sungai Merah and Sibu Central stations were then despatched to the scene to commence extinguishing works.

Upon arrival, they confirmed that the first house and a parked car were beyond saving, while the second house were 60 per cent destroyed.
The flames were brought under control at around 9.35 am.
