Firefighters and newsmen spare a thought for needy

MIRI: Thirty members of Persatuan Orang Kurang Upaya Fizikal Miri (POKUFM) here received contributions of food baskets and face masks through ‘Program Ziarah Sentuhan Kasih’.

The programme which was organised by the State Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA) Zone 6 together with the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) was in conjunction with the month of Ramadan.

State BOMBA Director Datuk Khirudin Drahman stated that the department continues to be committed in helping the community, not only in terms of providing quality services but also in welfare and well-being.

In addition to the food baskets and face masks, the department contributed three fire extinguishers and Khirudin’s personal contribution for the association.

“The department is always ready to carry out our responsibilities in various rescue missions, regardless of the people in need’s backgrounds.

“Even though the tasks can be challenging, our firefighters are always committed and have a high level of commitment in doing their job.

“This is our responsibility, it is for the sake of the community,” he said in his welcoming address during the programme which was held on Friday (April 1)

On the programme, Khirudin congratulated BOMBA Zone 6 and NSJA for being attentive and caring towards the community in need of assistance especially in the face of challenges brought by the COVID-19 virus.

Separately, NSJA president Andy Jong noted that the progamme is one of the initiatives to reach out to the community and those in need of assistance involving firefighters as well as the media.

“This is not the first time the department and media have worked together on successful progammes like this. We have organised a few ‘Program Ziarah Sentuhan Kasih BOMBA’ led by BOMBA Zone 6 Chief Superintendent Law Poh Kiong.

“The programmes have benefitted approximately 2,000 families in Miri, Marudi, Batu Niah and Bekenu areas,” he said.

Andy pointed out that efforts like this help forge better relationships with the community.

He stressed that the collaborative relationship between BOMBA and media is crucial as it ensures the information disseminated to the community is accurate and authentic, adding that it also facilities both parties to carry out their respective duties.

Also present during the programme were BOMBA Deputy Director Tiong Ling Hii and POKUFM chairman Mazlan Daraman.
