MIRI: Thirty-four people from 20 families were made homeless when fire destroyed a workers’ quarters in an oil palm plantation at Jalan Marudi, here on Today (Sept 27).

Miri Fire and Rescue Department acting chief Ahmad Nizam said they received an emergency call around 3.23pm – about six hours after the incident. Nevertheless, firefighters were desptached to the scene.

“A team of firemen from Lopeng fire station went to the scene, located some 55km away from the city centre,” he said.

The fire was believed to have started from one of the units and spread rapidly due to its wooden structures.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

“We were told that the incident occurred around 9.15 in the morning,” said Nizam.
