KUCHING: Juma’ani Pavilion is the first fashion hub and a leading one-stop fashion centre in Borneo, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

It also serves as a training centre for talented young local fashion designers who go on to become successful entrepreneurs in the field of fashion and textiles.

“This fashion hub is also the only marketing platform for local heritage products produced by Sarawakians,” said Abang Johari.

He said this in his speech read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the Juma’ani Pavilion Opening Ceremony here on Wednesday night.

The premier added Juma’ani Pavilion was a place for local designers to produce fashion designs by incorporating heritage elements in them.

According to Abang Johari, the local designers are divided into two groups — the Sarawak Centre of Technical Excellence (Centexs) trainees majoring in Fashion Technology and the existing local fashion designers.

“Each trainee who takes this field will be given comprehensive exposure starting from the sewing process to making designs.

“In order to produce excellent trainees in this field, Centexs has appointed four local fashion designers to help them.

“Throughout their studies, these trainees will also be exposed to production-related matters. They will be sent to Juma’ani Pavilion to produce clothes, shoes, bags, clutches, hijabs and so on. Once they are proficient, they will be offered jobs,” he said.

The premier said that the place was also equipped with various technologies including a 3D body scanner which was able to measure a person’s body without using a measuring tape.

“Body measurements will automatically be sent to the computer for editing before the information is sent to the polar printing machine.

“However, not all the products will be made here. Some will be sent to external production houses and later returned to Juma’ani Pavilion for the final process,” he explained.

Abang Johari said there was a machine for making shoes and products related to leather goods.

“So, anyone who wants to order shoes after this does not have to go far. He/she can come to Juma’ani Pavilion.

“This place also has a design creation laboratory that Centexs trainees and local designers can use to plan, create, design and sketch the designs that will be produced.

“A production space that includes a fabric display area, a cutting section, a sewing corner and a photography studio is also available,” he added.
