KUCHING: A fisherman, who suffered from a stroke while being at sea near Pulau Burong on Monday night, was rescued by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

The agency deployed their “KM Mengalum” asset to carry out the medical evacuation (Medevac) for the victim who was about 20 nautical miles from the MMEA jetty at Tun Abang Salahudin Maritime Complex (Komtas).

MMEA Sarawak acting director Captain Maritime Zin Azman Md Yunus told that the operations centre received a call around 8.15pm and deployed their asset to rescue the patient and to bring him to the hospital for further treatment.

“According to the victim’s friend, he was told by the victim that he felt very weak. As such he was believed to be suffering from stroke attack. The friend immediately contacted a nearby boat for help.

“Our vessel successfully rescued the victim and reached the jetty around 1.30am following bad weather at sea. The victim was then handed over to the paramedics for further treatment,” he said in a statement.

Zin pointed out that the agency was always ready to provide assistance to the maritime community during an emergency by calling the operation centre at 082-432544 or MERS 999.
