Fishermen receive compassionate fund

KUCHING: Kotak Fishermen Association received compassionate fund of RM34,000 from Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii in a handover ceremony held at the association’s headquarters at Sungai Apong here, yesterday.

According to Yii, the fund was provided by the federal government and will be distributed among the fishermen of the association.

He said the main objective of the fund is to allow the fishermen to purchase necessary equipments required when going out to sea. These include fishing nets, GPS gadgets, and life jackets among other things.

“We hope that the fund would be able to aid in providing sufficient equipments for the fishermen here.

“Over the past two years, Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong and I have contributed almost RM20,000 in total for the association,” he added.

Yii said that the previous contributions include funding for closed-circuit television (CCTV) installation, nearby road reparation, as well as LED street lamp installations.

He was also keen to announced that a proposal to rebuild the association headquarters’ lavatory had also been approved.

“We will utilise our (Bandar Kuching) funds to build a new lavatory facility here.

“And we will continue working hard to ensure the welfare of the people are being taken care of by the federal government,” he said.
