Two local fishing boats were detained on suspicion of violating the legal conditions of their license.

TANJUNG MANIS: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Tanjung Manis Zone detained two local Class C fishing boats on suspicion of violating the legal conditions of their licences last Thursday.

Tanjung Manis Zone maritime commander Mohd Ariz Md Kassim said the arrest took place around 4.30pm; about seven nautical miles off the nearest coast near Tanjung Manat waters.

“The two boats were spotted engaging in fishing activities by a maritime asset carrying out ‘Ops Permai’ patrols and proceeded to inspect them.

“The team found ten crew members including two skippers, aged between 22 and 57, aboard the boats and detained them,” he said.

Ariz stated that the arrest was the result of intelligence gathered for three days, following complaints from the fishing community.

The crew members and vessels were brought to the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) Fishery Complex in Tanjung Manis for further action.

The case will be investigated under Section 8 (b) of the Fisheries Act 1985 on suspicion of violating the legal conditions of the license.
