SELANGAU: A horrifying two-vehicle accident along Mile 40, Jalan Sibu-Bintulu on Monday (June 5) resulted in the tragic deaths of five individuals, one of whom was a two-year-old toddler.

According to a spokesperson from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), five other individuals managed to survive the crash but sustained injuries. They are currently receiving medical treatment at the Selangau health clinic.

Upon receiving notification of the accident involving a Perodua Myvi and a Kia Sportage, multiple rescue agencies swiftly arrived at the scene.

They immediately initiated extrication operations to free a man and a woman who were trapped in their seats inside the vehicles. Sadly, both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, other victims were rescued from the cars by passers-by and were promptly transported to the clinic for immediate medical attention.

The dead were three men, a woman and a two-year-old toddler.

The victims from the Myvi are identified as 24-year-old Alicesha Bathrish Langi and two-year-old Allesandro Collin Stewart while, the victims from the Kia are identified as 26-year-old Marcos Marican, 61-year-old Marican@Langkan Legi, and 30-year-old Nizam Kilat.

Four of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics while the toddler was pronounced dead at the Selangau health clinic. Their bodies were transported to Mukah Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

As for the injured victims, whose identities are currently unknown, they include two men, a teenage boy and two children. The extent of their injuries is yet to be determined.

Once the area was deemed safe, firefighters from the Selangau and Sungai Merah stations conducted cleanup operations to clear the accident debris, ensuring the road’s safety for other motorists.

At the accident site, authorities present included the police, Civil Defence Force (APM) and paramedics.
