Five injured, three family members including infant rescued from apartment fire

KUCHING: Three members of a family including an eight-month-old infant were rescued from a burning apartment block in Taman Suria Jaya, Jalan Matang, here today (Feb 10).

Five other residents aged between 18 and 69 years suffered various injuries after they jumped off the first floor of the four-storey apartment building in order to escape the blaze. All the victims are currently being warded at the Sarawak General Hospital.

State Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre said a distress call regarding the fire was received at 5.12am and personnel from Petra Jaya and Batu Lintang fire stations were immediately deployed to the scene.

“Upon arrival, it was found that the fire had razed 14 units of the four-storey apartment building and seven motorcycles.

“Firefighters acted swiftly to rescue a family of three people comprising a couple and their infant.

“Meanwhile, five other victims who jumped from the building to save themselves suffered various injuries,” it said in a statement.

The injured victims were rushed to Sarawak General Hospital Emergency Unit (SGH) for further treatment.

The fire brigade managed to control the fire at 5.43am and the firefighting operation ended at 7.20am.

The cause of the fire and loss to properties are still under investigation.
