KUCHING: Five new fire and rescue stations will become operational in the state next year, said Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director Khirudin Drahman.

The stations are at Bintangor, Sibujaya, Belaga, Lutong and Asajaya which are currently in various stages of completion.

Khirudin said the stations were scheduled to be completed by the end of this year but due to the movement control order (MCO), the works were postponed for six months.

“The department needs about 50 operating fire and rescue stations in Sarawak for an ideal coverage.

“To date, we have 34 operational fire stations including the latest one in Selangau. Other stations are also being planned such as Sungai Asap fire and rescue station E (for remote areas), stations in small towns such as Sebuyau, Mile 7 and Batu Kawa,” he said when met by reporters after the 2019 Bomba Excellence Award ceremony at Sarawak Bomba headquarters here yesterday.

He hoped that the department’s plan to have 50 stations in Sarawak could be achieved by 2025.

Khirudin said that the department was also deploying patrol teams to high risk areas during floods and droughts.

He disclosed that the department would be receiving five Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) machines, which were being shipped to Sarawak.

“Apart from that, we will also receive nine rapid intervention motorcycles (RIM) soon,” he said.
