Five Unimas students win Mitsubishi scholarship

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Five students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) have been awarded the Mitsubishi Corporation International Scholarship for the year 2020.

The virtual awards ceremony was held on Wednesday at the Koompassia Excelsa Gallery of Unimas, attended by representatives from Unimas and Mitsubishi Corporation (Kuala Lumpur office) as well as the scholarship recipients.

The Sarawak-born students, who are currently enrolled in the academic programme under the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, were selected based on their accomplishments in the areas of academics, extracurricular activities and leadership potential. They also need financial assistance.

They are Vincent Kiew Wei Shuen undertaking Master by Research (Year 1) as well as Glathycthcia Adriana James, Matelda De Avesha Sudin, Mohammad Norfitri Taib, and Muhammad Amirul Izany Abdullah undertaking Undergraduate Plant Resource Science and Management (Year 2).

Unimas vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi congratulated the recipients as well as their parents and families.

He urged them to strive for excellence in their academic journey at Unimas despite the challenging time due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Masashi Shiraishi, chief executive in Malaysia and general manager of Mitsubishi Corporation Kuala Lumpur, wished all the recipients the very best in their studies and encouraged them to focus on achieving their goals.

The Mitsubishi Corporation International Scholarship is a social contribution programme launched in 2000 to support university education, mainly in developing countries worldwide.

Implemented through the various Mitsubishi Corporation overseas offices, the objective of the programme as an educational support initiative is to foster human resources capable of contributing to the development of their home countries and the global society in the future.

This year marks the first year Mitsubishi Corporation is awarding students from Unimas in this international scholarship programme.
