KUCHING: A self-employed man will “celebrate” the Gawai Dayak behind bar after he was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment plus two strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to drug offences on Monday (May 17).

Sessions Court Judge Maris Agan meted the sentence on John Arrieyo Isa,28, under Section 39C (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, 1952.

John was found to be repeat offender as he had been convicted for drug addiction several times under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, 1952.

In giving the sentence, the judge noted that the offender had failed to stop taking drugs and in fact had been found to be unremorseful.

For the last offence, the accused was found positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine at 11.30 pm when undergoing a test at the Narcotics Division, Criminal Investigation Department of the Kuching district police station on August 22 last year.
