KUCHING: The Penggerak Komuniti Negara (PKN) Sarawak is organising a flag convoy to commemorate this year’s Malaysia Day celebration.
PKN Sarawak chairperson Nurhanim Mokhsen said the convoy would carry the Jalur Gemilang (national flag) and the Sarawak flag from one parliamentary constituency to the other from Kuching until Sibu.
“The Sarawak convoy is a statewide event as part of the Malaysia Day celebration which falls on Sept 16. It is a historic day for Malaysians and it marks the date when the Federation of Malaysia was formed.
“The convoy started from Petra Jaya on Sept 5 and made its way to the constituencies of Stampin and Puncak Borneo on the first day.
“It will carry the National flag, Sarawak flag and also PKN flag. These will be handed over to the person in charge of PKN in each parliamentary constituency all the way to Sibu where the national celebration for the Malaysia Day will be held,” she said in a statement on Sunday (Sept 6).
Commenting on the role of PKN, Nurhanim said it was a community based non-government organisation (NGO) to complement the government’s efforts to reach out to the less fortunate.
“Numerous community and welfare programs have been successfully carried since its inception two years ago. During the peak of the pandemic and in difficult circumstances, PKN Sarawak assisted and supported the efforts of the government of the day.
“This is by managing the distributions of food baskets all over Sarawak via our branches in 20 parliamentary areas,” she said.
Nurhanim said PKN Sarawak would continue to work with the Chief Minister of Sarawak in support of the leadership of Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
“PKN is confident that under the leadership of the premier, marginalised groups in Sarawak will be taken care of and we applaud his proposal to increase financial assistance under the welfare scheme from RM450 to RM1,000,” she said.
