KUCHING: Soil erosion and flash flood problem affecting the residents at Jalan Semaba here will be solved with improved drainage system and retaining wall through the Rural Transformation Project (RTP).

Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said the improvement is among the 11 RTPs implemented in Kota Sentosa and Batu Kitang with a total cost of RM800,000.

According to Lo, when it rains, the soil in the slope of Jalan Semaba 3 will be eroded and flash flood that occur will affect the houses of the residents in the area.

“This problem arose before the 12th state election and we solved it by building a large concrete ditch and retaining wall.

“We had delivered our promise and fulfilled it today. We didn’t lie,” he told the media after witnessing the handover of the project site yesterday (Oct 24).

Lo, who is also the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman said that from his side, more time was needed to survey the area to understand the problem before making sketches and estimating the cost of the project.

He explained that the project was then handed over to the contractor who was selected after voting process was made at the Resident’s Office.

In that regard, Lo extended his gratitude to the residents who were patient and trusted him and Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap in fulfilling their promises made during the 12th state election.

Meanwhile, Yap said both him and Lo worked as a team in solving several issues concerning Kota Sentosa constituency.

He said the problem of flash floods that hit the old town of Batu 7 will be solved with the construction of ditches through the allocation of RM1.1 million approved to the MPP.

“When the project is implemented, the problem of flash floods in the entire bazaar of Kota Sentosa, Batu 7 will no longer be an issue. So we are waiting for the official handover to the contractor,” he said.

In addition, Yap said the Batu 7 wet market was also upgraded for the comfort of hawkers and customers.

“Before the state election, the opposition who went down to the field said the wet market was humid and the hawkers were in discomfort because there were no fans.

“Therefore, an allocation of RM400,000 has been approved to upgrade the market for the comfort of both hawkers and customers in the area,” he said.
