Flash flood hits Miri due to incessant rain

Flood waters rising in Long Bemang following heavy rains at wee hours of Saturday.

MIRI: Flash flood were reported to have struck several areas in this division early this morning following heavy rains.

Zone 6 Fire and Rescue department reported that a secondary school, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Lutong were inundated by flood water at least one foot high due to the incessant rain.

A total 108 of its boarding students were affected by the flooding situation, as the flood completely covered the path heading towards their boarding flat.

The school has a total of 2,355 students, out of which 2,247 are day school students.

It was made to understand that teachers of the school have built a wooden plank from the student’s boarding flat towards the canteen hall and their classes rooms.

Meanwhile, in Long Bemang, Baram, flood waters are rising since 3am this morning (Saturday) following heavy rains.

As of 8.41 am this morning, the water level was at 0.7 feet high and the trend is increasing.

Following to the situation, electrical substation at the area has been temporary closed down for the
safety of the residents.

Miri APM help clearing a tree that was uprooted and crashed on a car in Kampung Piasau Utara after heavy rain this morning.

On a separate incident, in Kampung Piasau Utara, a car was damaged after a tree uprooted during heavy rain at wee hours on Saturday and crashed on the vehicle.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as the car was parked in front of the owner’s house earlier that day.

A team of Miri Civil Defence Force (APM) were deployed to remove the fallen tree.

According to Miri APM officer in-charge Captain (PA) Usman Harto, they received a distressed call on the incident around 7.08am.

It took them nearly 30 minutes to remove the tree.
