BINTULU: A total of 110 families in Sungai Plan village which was hit by a flash flood were waiting anxiously monitoring their situation while waiting for help to arrive.

Kampung Sg Plan Malay chief, Bujang Wahap, their place was hit by flash floods since Saturday (Nov 28).

“In my area 40 houses are affected while an Iban longhouse with 70 doors nearby was affected. We already asked for evacuation. On the other hand, I hope the situation improves quickly so that we don’t need help,” he told New Sarawak Tribune on Sunday (Nov 29).

Their homes were inundated up to waist level, but fortunately the flood was slowly subsiding since evening.

He believed the drainage system has not been able to drain the water fast enough, thus resulting in overflow of water in the area.

“I hope the relevant government agencies will look into this matter,” he said.

On Saturday, the flash flood in Bintulu caused 118 families from Sungai Plan, Sungai Sebatang and Kidurong Avenue housing estate to be evacuated to a relief centre at Muhibah indoor stadium.

The hours-long heavy rain also triggered a hill-slope erosion which affected the foundation of a longhouse, Rumah Jarau at Kampung Dayak, Sungai Plan.
