MIRI: Flood waters which inundated longhouses and schools in low-lying areas in the Northern Region of Sarawak since Friday have begun receding as of this afternoon.

A villager at Kampung Uma Beluvuh, Long Panai Tutoh walks in a waist-high flood water.

Affected villagers have also begun the arduous task of removing debris and cleaning their longhouses.

Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) zone 6 chief, Supt Law Poh Kiong said the water level at several of the affected areas has however remained unchanged, while at some areas such as at Rumah Banyah Banyi Sungai Sebubu Tinjar Baram, Kampung Uma Beluvuh in Long Panai and SMK Long Lama, the water level had reportedly increased.

In SK Long Panai, the flood level reached 6.4 feet, while SMK Long Lama was in about four feet deep of flood water.

Meanwhile, four temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in Lawas are still housing flood evacuees from affected villages in the district.
