SIBU: The biggest challenge to Sibu’s tourism promotion plans is the never-ending flooding problem, said Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

The federal Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture noted that by solving the perennial flooding problem, the town’s tourism will improve and become more integrated with Malaysia’s tourism and arts industry.

Tiong said riverbed survey works on the Rejang and Igan rivers are in progress for the required data to carry out the dredging project and plan an effective flood control programme.

“This must be done to cope with the sudden surges in water volume and to allow for smooth drainage of water brought on by unpredictable weather patterns caused by climate change.

“As far as I know, the Deputy Premier of Sarawak and Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government will lead a delegation overseas to study and come up with effective improvement measures for the state’s drainage system,” he said.

The Bintulu MP was speaking at a Chinese New Year (CNY) dinner hosted by Sibu United Chinese Association (UCA) at a leading hotel here yesterday (Jan 25).

He reassured that his ministry is committed to promoting local tourism by identifying suitable tourist attractions and improving them.

Meanwhile, on the association, he noted that UCA Sibu has played a key role by being a representative of the Chinese community, adding that the association has a pivotal role in forging unity among the people, thus improving their welfare and well-being.

“They ensure that the rights and interests of the local Chinese community are not sidelined in the mainstream of national development.

“We can see that the organisation and its associate members have been speaking out strongly and putting forth constructive and beneficial opinions and feedback on various matters, including politics, economic development, culture and education,” he said.

Meanwhile, on the recent MA63 Action Implementation meeting, Tiong said Sarawak and the federal government have reached a consensus on resolving several issues important to Sarawak and will continue to implement them gradually.
