MIRI: The water level of some rivers in low-lying areas in the Northern Region has begun to rise following heavy rain over the past few days.

Miri Fire and Rescue department Zone six chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said areas such as Kampung Long Bemang in the interior of Ulu Baram has seen water level rising up to two feet high as of Aug 22 following a heavy rain that occurred over the weekend.

However, despite the rising water level, Law said, there has been no evacuation of villagers in those areas.

He added, currently, 530 villagers from 100 households in Rumah Long Bemang were on standby for possible evacuation, in case the water level kept rising. The longhouse comprising four blocks namely Haleluyah, Hosana, Maranata and Calvary is the longest longhouse in the Northern Region.

Law noted that flood water has inundated a computer laboratory, teachers quarters and flats at SMK Tutoh Apoh. He said the water level had risen to 1.6 feet high at 8.30am Sunday (Aug 22).
