LONG LAMA:  The state government is focusing on high impact development projects in Baram, especially in Telang Usan.

This is to ensure the people in the area benefit from such development, said Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.

Speaking at the launching of “Jelajah Belia Sarawak 2019” held here last Saturday, he said prior to the implementation of such high impact development projects, the government would make sure these projects would help spur the people’s economy and improve their standard of living.

The event was held at the hall of SJK(C) Kee Tee in Long Lama.

“Other aspects to be considered are the natural resources available in that particular area,” Dennis said.

Citing Ulu Baram as an example, he said, with its geographical location, the area is blessed with huge river suitable for hydro power potential.

“However, there are some among us who rejected the idea of building a dam due to reasons only known to themselves. The project will no longer take off therefore we will have to look into other alternatives but I am afraid that the other options will not be attractive to modern youth and of course the process will be definitely going at a slow pace,” he said, in responding to a question from one of the youths at the programme especially pertaining to the very few job opportunities available in Telang Usan and Baram.

He added, for development to take place in any area, there must be positive response or participation from the locals themselves.

“Development comes in many forms and not necessarily with buildings such as shopping malls or twin towers in Long Lama. Such development can be in the form of developing agriculture, tourism that can exploit the natural resources available here in Telang Usan,” Dennis pointed out.

“But these may not so attractive to the young generation as mega projects could have offered them jobs as engineers, top management position, and office staff,” he said.

Nearly 1,000 youths attended the “Jelajah Belia Sarawak 2019”.

Also present were Principal Assistant Secretary (Youth Division) in the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Nancy Jolhi and Kayan community leader Temengong Elizabeth Deng.
