LONG LAMA HEALTH CLINIC

MIRI: The collapse of several structures of the Long Lama health clinic and cracks detected on the building last month, believed to be due to continuous soil erosion, had left the locals stunned.

Built in 2013 with a cost of RM30 million, the clinic is a vital medical facility, catering to some 40,000 people of that area.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has already instructed the Public Works Department (JKR) to carry out immediate soil studies on the estate during his visit to the site yesterday.

A one-week time frame was given to JKR to come up with a solution.

Following the erosion, the clinic was relocated to the Long Lama multi-purpose hall for the time being. On top of that, an allocation of RM70,000 was approved to help improve the facility at the temporary site.

The New Sarawak Tribune, during our brief visit to Long Lama yesterday, had the opportunity to meet and ask Long Lama folk on the subject matter.

“We hope that relevant agencies appointed by the government can do the repair works immediately because the clinic is very crucial to the people of Long Lama and especially during emergencies. We don’t have much choice, the second nearest health care facility we have is located in Bakong and then Miri … in order to reach Bakong or Miri, it’s time consuming.”

“As a resident of Long Lama, of course I was so sad upon hearing the unfortunate event. Though  I am hoping that healthcare services for the people here continue operational despite the soil erosion incident. Thank you to the state government for making the decision of relocating the clinic to Long Lama multi-purpose hall.”

Please do the repair works immediately as healthcare services are crucial for the rural people here. People within this area sometimes cannot afford to commute to Miri. Thank you to the Sarawak government for the allocation given to better improve the clinic’s temporary site.”

“Thank you to the state government and Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas for coming down here and inspecting the Long Lama Health Clinic. The erosion has made us worried because we don’t have much of a choice if we have to go to Miri or Bakong — it would be time consuming.’

“Please help us repair the healthcare facilities — we don’t have other places to go to, especially during emergencies. Miri or Bakong seems to be far from Long Lama.”
