KUCHING: Emergency food aid has been sent to destitute families to reduce their burden following the implementation of the movement control order (MCO) due to Covid-19.

Assistant Minister of Utilities (Water Supply) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said at least 835 families from 13 villages were running out of food supplies.

“We have distributed the food box aid to 104 needy families from four villages.

“The villages are Kampung Boyan, Kampung Gersik, Kampung Surabaya Ulu and Kampung Bintawa Batu,” he told New Sarawak Tribune when contacted yesterday.

Abdul Rahman, who is also Pantai Damai assemblyman, said the food box aid containing essential goods were distributed to the hardcore poor, the daily paid or self-employed individuals.

“This additional initiative is to help the needy, especially those who cannot work or earn money due to the implementation of the MCO period.

“The food box aid has been distributed in the last four days and we will continue to send the boxes through our officers from the Pantai Dalam Service Centre,” he said.

Abdul Rahman added that the distribution was on a daily basis and involved members of the village security and development committees (JKKKs).

“Lorries and vans are being used to transport the food to the recipients with the help of JKKK and our people.

“This to avoid any physical encounters that can contribute to the spread of the infection,” he explained.

As of yesterday, at least 2,385 families from 46 villages in his constituency had applied for the food aid relief assistance from Pantai Dalam Service Centre.

The food aid relief operation cost about RM60,000, with contributions from Sacofa Sdn Bhd (Sacofa) and Sarawak Energy Berhad.
