KUCHING: The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) will continue with food assistance for those in need.

“If there is a need to continue the food assistance, we will,” its chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas assured during the Covid-19 daily update press conference yesterday.

He said the Food Supply Chain Sub-Committee chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan would assess the situation.

Meanwhile, he said the state government is studying the food supply and demand situation, as some food-producing areas may face a surplus in supply while other markets faced shortages due to the movement restrictions during the MCO.

“If there is a shortage, prices may increase,” he said.

He said the state government had allocated funds to Region Farmers’ Organisations (PPK) to purchase farm produce and move these goods from surplus regions to areas in short supply so that the prices could be regulated.

He said the situation is being monitored, including taking action against profiteers.

On another note, Uggah advised those working in towns not to return to their villages or longhouses for e Hari Raya and Gawai Dayak, especially those currently residing in red zones.

“If there is movement, especially mass movement, from red zones to green zones such as from Kuching to Kapit, the possibility of Covid-19 spreading is there,” he said.
