For slashing another, man gets five months in prison

SIBU: The Magistrates’ Court here has fined a 37-year-old man RM4,000, in default five months’ imprisonment, for assault.

Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokhtar passed sentence on Zapril from Jalan Masjid after he pleaded guilty today.

According to the charge sheet, the accused had voluntarily caused hurt to a 46-year-old man by using a machete, a weapon listed under the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

The offence framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code provides for a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment or a fine or whipping or any of the two, if convicted.

According to the case brief, police received a call about someone fighting in Jalan Masjid on June 25 at about 3.55pm.

A police team arrived later and arrested the accused, seizing a machete as evidence.

Investigation found that the accused had slashed another man with the machete due to a misunderstanding.

The accused, who was unrepresented, was jailed as he was unable to pay the fine.
