BINTULU: Narcotics police arrested a foreign man for possessing 6.5g of suspected syabu (methamphetamine) yesterday (Feb 27).

Bintulu police chief Supt Nixon Joshua Ali said that the 41-year-old suspect was detained for the alleged distribution and abuse of drugs in Kemena area.

“The suspect is being investigated under Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 after the seizure of three straw tubes and a plastic packet containing the suspected syabu.

“If convicted, the suspect could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison, along with up to three lashes of the cane,” he said.

Further investigations revealed that the seized drugs were intended for distribution in Kemena area, potentially catering to around 20 users.

The suspect, who tested positive for drug use, will also be investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not having the relevant valid travel documents.

Nixon stressed that the arrest was part of ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse and prevent criminal activities in Bintulu.
