KUCHING: The public must remember that fires are often caused by forgetfulness, carelessness and negligence, said Khirudin Drahman.

The State Fire and Rescue Department director pointed out that knowing what to do in the event of a fire can help to minimise the impact.

He said this during the launch of a Chinese New Year fire safety campaign that was launched by Local Government and Housing Minister, Datuk Seri Dri Sim Kui Hian today (Feb 10).

“The first five minutes is very crucial because when the right actions are taken, a fire will not spread or become big.

“If we freeze or panic and do not know what to do, it will not help the situation. The recent fire that happened at Taman Suria Jaya, Jalan Matang is a good lesson on the importance of proper housekeeping and maintenance.

“The public should know the potential fire risks that exist when you leave items like old furniture and newspapers around the compound. They should not wait around or only take action when advised by the fire department or government agencies,” he explained.

He also advised the public to not take fire cases as opportunities to become reporters or feel proud of being the one to viral the story on social media.

He said that the fire safety campaign is being conducted on social media due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Among the activities are showing of short film produced by the officers and staff, Chinese New Year greetings and live programme entitled ‘Juh Beloya Sempena Tahun Baharu Cina’.

The state fire department has also conducted various programmes such as sanitising Lions Club Nursery Home, fire drill at the Salvation Army Children’s Home as well as blood donation drive in February.

He praised the public for cooperating with the department which is something to be proud of.

“Based on my observation during the recent flood especially in Serian and Samarahan districts, the cooperation of the public was very good. It actually facilitated the work of the relevant authorities.

“TV3 was in touch with me online. I believe that they highlighted how well the relevant authorities cooperated and coordinated with government agencies such as the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC). This is definitely something for us Sarawakians to be proud of,” he said.
