Former babysitter pleads not guilty to child abuse

KUALA LUMPUR: A former babysitter was charged in the Sessions Court here today with exposing a 22-month-old girl to physical injury by neglecting the child when she was under her care last year.

Siti Hassan, 65, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge before Judge Mahyun Talib.

The woman was charged with exposing the girl to injury by neglecting the child at a low cost apartment in Bandar Tasik Selatan here 2 pm on Oct 15 last year.

She was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides an imprisonment for up to 20 years, or fine, or both, if found guilty.

The prosecution, conducted by deputy public prosecutor Afiq Nazrim Zaharinan, did not offer bail on grounds that the offence was serious, but Siti, unrepresented, asked that she be allowed bail because she had diabetes and high-blood pressure.

“I’m also not working and has a school-going child to support,” she said, adding that her husband was also unemployed.

The court then set bail at RM8,000 in one surety and fixed March 29 for mention. – Bernama
