Former SESCO employee fined RM5k for bribery

THE accused has been ordered to pay a total fine of RM5,000 imposed by the court.

MIRI: A 45 year-old former assistant engineer at Syarikat Sesco Berhad (SESCO) Miri on Wednesday was fined a total of RM5,000 on five charges , in default 15 months’ jail by the Special Corruption Court here after being found guilty of receiving bribes.

Judge Steve Ritikos imposed a fined of RM1,000 on each charge or three months’ jail in default. All fines were to be paid yesterday.

The accused, Karambie Sulong, pleaded guilty to five out of 10 charges of receiving bribes amounting to RM1,600 from 2019 until 2020.

According to the charge sheet, the accused was alleged to have obtained bribes involving transactions to between RM100 to RM300 from seven contractors, which were banked directly into his bank account.

The charges were filed under Section 25(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and can be punished under Section 25(2) of the same act.

MACC officer Nur Nisla Abdul Latif prosecuted the case while the accused was represented by Shikh Rajjish Ahmad.
