PADAWAN: Two brothers and two others faced charges in court on Tuesday (Feb 27) for engaging in a fight in front of a premises at Jalan Batu Kawa-Matang last week.

The incident occurred last Thursday (Feb 22), and the suspects, aged between 20 and 25, were arrested on Friday (Feb 24). They have been charged with rioting in public places under Section 148 of the Penal Code.

Padawan police chief Supt Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad explained at a press conference during the Padawan district police headquarters annual shooting training in Pulapol Kuching that the cause of the incident was the younger brother reprimanding his older brother’s girlfriend, leading to the older brother’s upset.

He clarified that contrary to allegations on social media, there were no shootings during the incident. The loud noises heard were from firecrackers thrown during the dispute.

“There is no case of shooting, just a case of driving in a dangerous situation in a public place. Netizen’s comments (that there was a shootout) are not true; there were no firearms involved in the incident,” Supt Abang Zainal Abidin clarified.
