Four new cases reported

KUCHING: Four new imported Covid-19 cases were reported in Sarawak today, taking the total tally to 1,114.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said two cases were recorded in Kuching, and one each in Sibu and Betong.

Case 1,111 is a local woman who returned from Johor and arrived in Sibu on Saturday (Dec 26).

Upon arrival in Sibu Airport, she underwent a Covid-19 reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rT-PCR) screening and was found to be positive on Monday (Dec 28).

“She and her nine other family members were directed to undergo a 14-day quarantine at their home in Betong and are required to wear a wristband.

“The case did not show any signs or symptoms of the infection and was referred to Sibu Hospital for further treatment,” SDMC said today.

Case 1,112 is a local man who returned from Kuala Lumpur and arrived in Sibu on Sunday (Dec 27).

He underwent a Covid-19 screening at Sibu Airport and was found to be positive today. He was also being instructed to undergo a 14-day quarantine at home.

The case also did not show any signs or symptoms of the infection and was referred to Sibu Hospital for further treatment.

Further investigation is being conducted and contract tracing for both cases is on its way.

Both cases were categorised as Import Case B for getting infected when being at a Covid-19 high-risk area.

Meanwhile, case 1,113 is a local man who returned from Liberia, Africa via Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and arrived in Kuching on Sunday (Dec 26).

SDMC revealed that the case had undergone a Covid-19 screening test in Liberia four times before returning to Malaysia.

“The last Covid-19 screening was done in Dec 20 in Liberia and was he found to be negative. Upon arrival at KLIA, he underwent a rapid test kit (RTK) antigen test on Dec 24 and was found to be not positive for Covid-19.

The case also spent a night at a departure room of KLIA-1 for two nights before continuing his flight to Kuching.

“The case underwent rT-PCR screening at Kuching International Airport (KIA) and was found positive on Monday (Dec 28).

“He did not show any signs or symptoms of the infection and was referred to Sarawak General Hospital for further treatment.

“The case is categorised as Import Case A as he was infected while abroad,” SDMC said.

Case 1,114 is a local man who returned from Johor to Kuching on Sunday (Dec 27).

Upon arrival at KIA, he underwent a Covid-19 rT-PCR screening on Friday (Dec 25) and was found to be positive on Monday (Dec 28).

The case is also instructed to undergo the mandatory 10-day quarantine at a quarantine centre and the remaining four days at home.

The case is also categorised as Import Case B and contract tracing is on its way.

SDMC added that there were two new recovered and discharged cases, one each from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and Miri Hospital. This brings the total of recovered and discharged cases to 1,064 or 95.51 percent.

A total of 29 cases are still being treated at isolation wards, of which 14 are in SGH, five each in Miri Hospital, Bintulu Hospital and Sibu Hospital. There are no cases being treated at intensive care units (ICUs).

There are four persons-under-investigation (PUI) while none are awaiting laboratory results.

A total of 271 persons-under-surveillance (PUS) have undergone quarantine, bringing the total number of PUS at 42 hotels and non-hotel quarantine centres statewide to 3,592 while 46,811 have completed their quarantine period.

“Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Lawas maintain their statuses are yellow zones after five locally transmitted cases were reported in the last 14 days — two in Sibu and one each in Kuching, Bintulu and Lawas, while 36 other districts are green zones,” SDMC said.
