Four new clusters, including two in Kuching

KUCHING: The State Health Department yesterday recorded four new clusters in Kuching district, Kanowit district and the Pakan district.

In Kuching, there are two new clusters, namely the Tanam Sourabaya Indah cluster and the Jalan Jambatan Gantung cluster.

According to a statement from the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the Taman Sourabaya Indah cluster is a community cluster involving 34 family members in the house of the index case on May 13, the first day of Hari Raya.

“After screening tests were conducted, eight more individuals tested positive for Covid-19 including seven cases today (May 23),” it said.

Of the 34 individuals who were tested, nine individuals including the index case tested positive, 22 were negative while three more cases were awaiting their results.

All positive cases were referred to the Sarawak General Hospital and admitted to Covid-19 Quarantine and Treatment Centre (PKRC) for isolation and treatment.

The Jalan Jambatan Gantung cluster in Kuching district is also a community cluster during the celebration of Hari Raya.

“The cluster involved a settlement at Lorong 1, Jalan Jambatan Gantung. On May 13, the index case visited a few houses around Kuching.

“The cluster involved family members and the houses visited by the index case,” said SDMC.

Of the 25 individuals who were tested, nine including the index case were positive, 15 were negative while one was awaiting the result.

In Kanowit, a community cluster called the Sungai Majau cluster involved a longhouse in Nanga Sepatang.

“Screening tests were conducted on close contacts to the case and 25 individuals were positive for Covid-19.

“Of the 51 individuals who were tested, 26 including the index case tested positive, 24 tested negative while one was awaiting the result,” said the committee.

The positive cases were referred to the Kanowit Hospital and admitted to the PKRCs in Sibu and Kanowit for isolation and treatment.

The Bukit Temedak cluster in Pakan is a community cluster involving a longhouse in Merampau.

SDMC said screening tests found 29 individuals including 17 new cases were positive for Covid-19. 

“Of the 88 individuals who were tested, 30 cases including the index case were positive, 48 were negative while 10 more cases were still awaiting the results,” it said.

All positive cases were referred to the Sarikei Hospital and admitted to the PKRC in Sarikei for isolation and treatment.

SDMC said of the 84 active clusters in the state, eight recorded 83 new cases.
