Four new community clusters in Sarawak

KUCHING: Four new Covid-19 clusters were declared by the State Health Department on Monday (Apr 19).

State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said all the clusters were community clusters, namely the Sungai Anus Cluster in Selangau, Sungai Selitut Cluster in Tatau, Sungai Passin Cluster in Matu and Sungai Duan Cluster in Mukah.

SDMC said the Sungai Anus Cluster in Selangau involved a longhouse in the Sungai Anus area.

“The index case involved a 69-year-old local man who was detected through screening at Selangau Health Clinic on April 5 and was confirmed positive for Covid-19 on April 9, 2021. The man, who worked as a lorry driver on a farm in the Tatau district, had returned to Sungai Anus, Selangau on April 2. 

“After further investigation and active case detection among family members and casual contacts to this index case, 38 new Covid-19 positive cases were uncovered. Out of 51 individuals who were screened, 39 cases were positive for Covid-19 including the index case,” the committee said in a statement today.

SDMC said the Sungai Selitut Cluster in Tatau was a community cluster involving a longhouse in the Sungai Selitut area in Tatau.

It said the index case to the cluster was a 39-year-old local man who was detected through pre-employment screening at Tatau Health Clinic on April 8 and was confirmed positive for Covid-19 on April 10.

“The movement of the index case only involved areas of the longhouse and workplace only.  After further investigation and active case detection among family contacts and casual contacts to this index case in longhouses, 17 new Covid-19 positive cases were uncovered,” added SDMC.

Meanwhile, the committee said four longhouses located in Sungai Passin, Matu were involved in the Sungai Passin Cluster.

“The index case for this cluster is a 55-year-old local woman who was detected through screening of symptomatic individuals at Sibu Hospital. The case was confirmed positive for Covid-19 through rT-PCR test on April 2. After active case detection and screening of close contacts, family members and casual contacts to the index case, 48 new Covid-19 positive cases were uncovered.”

On the Sungai Duan Cluster in Mukah, SDMC said it involved seven longhouses located in the area.

“The index case for this cluster is a 65-year-old local man who was detected through the screening of symptomatic individuals at Bintulu Hospital. The case was confirmed positive for Covid-19 through rT-PCR test on April 2.

“After active case detection and screening of close contacts, family members and casual contacts to this index case, 83 new Covid-19 positive cases were uncovered.”

 SDMC also announced the end of the Sungai Bakong Cluster in Meradong after no new cases were detected or reported within the past 28 days.

“There are currently 49 active clusters in the state. Twelve clusters recorded 153 new cases while 37 clusters did not record any additions,” it added.
