Four students face life imprisonment, caning for drug offences

KUCHING: Four students of a high education institution yesterday pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court to a charge under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

They made the plea before Judge Mohd Taufik Mohd Yusoff.

They were charged under Section 6B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and could be sentenced under Section 6B (3) read with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

And if convicted, they may be jailed for life and caned not less than six strokes.

Two of the four accused were also charged under Section 6 and to be punished under Section 39A (1) read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

If found guilty, they could be jailed not less than two years and not more than five years, and whipped no fewer than three times and not more than nine times.

According to the case statement, all were detained in a raid by narcotics police at 4pm on February 25 at Kampung Atas, Sungai Cina, in Matang.

All the suspects tested positive for marijuana and seven transparent packets of light and dry fennel lumps of marijuana drugs with a total weight of 264.41gm were confiscated from them.

Other items seized were grinders, digital weighing scale and a 10cm-tall cannabis plant.

The court did not allow for bail and fixed April 12 and 16 for mention of the case.
