KUCHING: Datuk James Chan Khay Syn who served as the mayor of Kuching City South Council (MBKS) for the past 11 years is leaving behind a legacy — the first ever ‘Frame of MBKS’.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian pointed this out when officiating at the lighting of the frame here at MBKS Boulevard, Jalan Padungan.

He added that the frame was the first ever in the state and country.

“People come to Kuching to take pictures of the cat statue at the Padungan roundabout or the famous cat statue in front of Grand Margherita Hotel.

Therefore, thanks to the creative thinking of Chan and his councillors, the public, especially tourists, can come here to see the city hall,” he said.

Chan pointed out that previously, there was no signage to inform the public where the city hall was.

“With the building of this 3D signage, people finally know where MBKS is.

“This came from the brilliant and creative ideas of the young councillors. The purpose of the frame is to help the public get a good view of the building when taking a picture.

“Even though this is my last term, I am happy with this project. We in MBKS are serving the people of Kuching and promoting the city to tourists,” he said.

The ‘Frame of MBKS’ frames the iconic MBKS building to create a picturesque postcard view.

Every photo taken appears to look like a magazine cover page, with the MBKS building as backdrop.

Besides serving as a new attraction in Kuching, the sign serves as an ‘Instagrammable’ spot that promotes MBKS on social media and connects it to the world.
