MIRI: A freak storm yesterday struck Bekenu, a small fishing town about 47 km from here, ripping off the roofs of some houses.

The storm, accompanied by heavy rain, happened at around 3pm.

At Rumah Ramba Sg. Liam Bekenu, Jalan Lama Miri Bintulu, it seriously damaged 24 roofs.

Eighty-two residents affected by the storm were placed at a temporary shelter at SK Sg Liam Bakong.

Six firefighters led by Senior Fire Officer II Ellai Bidang assisted them.

A resident who suffered minor injuries was sent to the Bekenu health clinic for treatment.

Also present at the scene were Assistant Fire Superintendent Mohd Ammar (Miri Zone Operation Officer), Bekenu Fire Volunteer Brigade (PBS Bekenu), Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) and Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sesco).

The cost of damage faced by the residents is still being determined.
